Neurodermatitis
Understanding Neurodermatitis
Neurodermatitis, also called lichen simplex chronicus, develops when repeated itching, rubbing, or scratching causes an area of skin to become increasingly irritated and thickened. The cycle may begin with an itch, irritation, stress-related scratching, or an underlying skin concern.
As scratching continues, the affected area may become dry, rough, scaly, darker, or leathery in appearance. Common locations include the neck, scalp, wrists, forearms, ankles, thighs, and other areas that are easy to reach and scratch.
Breaking the itch-scratch cycle is an important part of treatment. A dermatology evaluation can help identify contributing factors, relieve symptoms, and create a personalized strategy to protect and restore the skin.
